My portable projector setup for occasional movie watching in the bedroom
We don’t have a TV in the bedroom (no space for it and I have an aversion to large glass rectangles outside my office) and usually watch group stuff in the living room on the projector, but we do occasionally want to watch a movie or murderbot in bed. I have a small portable projector and rigged up a mount on the wall which gets covered by a framed picture when it’s not in use. There’s a parts list at the end if you want to do this. I get a small kickback from Amazon if you buy something from one of the links.
I used to use a Nebula Capsule 2 for this (which I originally backed on kickstarter and have used happily for years), but I was getting dissatisfied with the brightness, so I wanted to get something newer. I tried the Nebula Capsule 3 Laser which had a pretty nice picture and was brighter than the Capsule 2, but found that it suffered really badly from audio stutters. I ended up with an XGIMI Halo+ which is a fair bit larger, but also substantially brighter and also will be suitable for bringing up to the roof and watching outdoor movies. The fan is a bit loud for a small enclosed room when running on AC power, but it’s still plenty bright enough for a dark bedroom on the battery in eco mode.
I wanted it shifted down from the mount on the wall, so I used an extension rail. Everything is arca swiss mounts.
When it’s not in use, the clamp on the wall is very slim and can be easily covered by a framed picture.
Here’s a closeup of the rail mount with the projector attached. I originally had it just clamped directly to the wall, but wasn’t happy with where the picture ended up on the ceiling and needed a small leveler tripod head. It was a bit of a challenge to find one that was both not very tall and also sturdy enough to hold the weight.
- Wall clamp
- 400mm rail (you might want a longer or shorter one)
- Double clamp
- Tripod leveling base (study and relatively low footprint)
- Toggler alligator anchors (very sturdy for drywall mounting)
- XGIMI Halo+ projector
I’m very happy with this setup overall. The quality on these portable projectors has improved vastly in the past few years.
